EC Vice-President Šefčovič approves of achievements of AST in energy security

eng_cef_cofinancing.pngDuring his visit to Latvia European Commission (EC) Vice-President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič approved of the achievements of JSC "Augstsprieguma tīkls" (AST) in energy security.

During the meeting on 2 February 2018, together with the AST Board Chairman Varis Boks and Board Member Arnis Staltmanis, they visited the Priedaine substation, which is being reconstructed along with the construction of the "Kurzemes loks" power line stage 3. The project expenses, which total 127 million, are 45% co-funded by the Connecting European Facility funds.

Šefčovič became acquainted with the progress of the Kurzemes loks project, as well as discussed issues related to the synchronization of the Baltic power networks in the European Union. "Kurzemes loks" is an energy infrastructure project, within which is planned to construct 330 kV overhead high voltage power lines in the Western part of Latvia in order to eliminate the lacking increased capacity connections in Kurzeme.

EC Vice-President Šefčovič visited Latvia as part of the second Energy Union Tour. During the formal visit he is also meeting with Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Economics and Finance, members of the Saeima European Affairs Commission, as well as representatives of civil society.
