Electricity supply disruption in Riga and Latvia

News

On Tuesday, June 9, at 9:34 AM a technological disturbance in the 330 kV electricity transmission network of AS Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST) was registered - the 330 kV cable between substations of Riga TEC-1 and Imanta was disconnected. The cable was disconnected from the power supply by the network protection automation within 80 milliseconds after a short circuit. After that, as the result of network division automation and overload protection actions, the 110 kV electricity supply network was divided, thus disrupting the electricity supply to consumers. In total 27 substations were disconnected from the transmission network. Part of Riga on the right bank of the Daugava, outskirts of Riga, towns of Limbaži, Sigulda, Saulkrasti, Skulte, and Carnikava experienced a disturbed supply of electricity.

Restoration of the electricity supply was started promptly, gradually resuming the electricity supply in the 110 kV network. At 10:40 AM most of the affected substations in Riga and Latvia were reconnected. At 11:14 AM, the operation of 110 kV electricity transmission network was completely restored and the electricity supply from the transmission network side in whole Latvia was available.

The reason for disconnection was a short circuit in the 330 kV underground cable, reasons of which are currently being investigated by the experts.

At 2.30 PM, a press conference was held at the premises of AST on 86 Dārzciema Street, Riga, Latvia, where AST informed about electricity supply disruptions in Riga and Latvia.
